Govardhan Leela Sushobhan Thali portrays one of the most celebrated episodes from Krishna’s life in Vraja—the lifting of Govardhan Hill. According to the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Krishna encouraged the residents of Vraja to worship Govardhan Hill and the natural world around them rather than conduct the sacrifice traditionally offered to Indra. Angered by this, Indra sent fierce rains and storms upon the region.
Seeing the people and cattle of Vraja in danger, Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill with one hand and invited the entire community to take shelter beneath it. The Bhāgavatam describes Krishna holding the hill for seven days, protecting the people and their cows until the rains finally ceased and Indra withdrew the storm.
The artwork captures Krishna standing beneath the lifted mountain, surrounded by the people and cattle of Vraja. It represents protection, compassion and the reassurance that comes from surrendering to a higher source of strength.
