The Divine Shield of Lord Hanuman

The Divine Shield of Lord Hanuman

Lord Hanuman is the embodiment of strength, devotion, and fearless protection. Among all the prayers dedicated to him, the Bajrang Baan (बजरंग बाण) holds a uniquely powerful place in the hearts of devotees. Literally meaning "The Arrow of Bajrang (Hanuman)", this sacred scripture is not just a prayer — it is an urgent, heartfelt call to Hanumanji's immediate presence and grace.

What is the Bajrang Baan?

The Bajrang Baan is a devotional scripture composed in the classical Awadhi style. Unlike the gentle, flowing rhythm of the Hanuman Chalisa, the Bajrang Baan is a direct and fervent appeal — recited especially in times of fear, crisis, suffering, or when facing powerful obstacles. It is believed to invoke Hanumanji's swift, unstoppable intervention in the devotee's life.

The text is rich with mantric syllables — ॐ हनु हनु हनु, ॐ ह्नीं ह्नीं, ॐ हं हं — which carry deep vibrational energy believed to dispel negativity, evil, illness, and misfortune.

Significance of the Bajrang Baan

The Bajrang Baan is considered one of the most potent Hanuman prayers for several reasons:

1. Immediate Invocation It directly appeals to Hanumanji's urgency and speed — "आतुर दौरि महा सुख दीजै" (Come swiftly and bestow great joy). Devotees recite it when they need immediate divine intervention.

2. Recollection of Hanuman's Deeds Each verse recalls Hanumanji's legendary acts — his leap across the ocean, his encounter with Surasa and Lankini, his comfort to Vibhishana, his discovery of Sita Mata, and his burning of Lanka. These are not merely stories; they remind the devotee of his limitless power.

3. Mantric Protection The sacred syllables woven into the prayer act as a shield against negative forces — evil spirits, black magic, illness, and adversity.

4. A Prayer of Surrender The devotee openly confesses their limitations — "पूजा जप तप नेम अचारा, नहिं जानत कछु दास तुम्हारा" (Your devotee knows nothing of rituals or austerities) — and places complete trust in Hanumanji's grace. This surrender itself is the key.

Who Should Recite Bajrang Baan & When?

The Bajrang Baan is ideally recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days most sacred to Lord Hanuman. It is also recited during personal crisis, before important endeavours, or as part of a regular devotional practice.

Light a lamp or incense (dhoop) before beginning. Sit facing east or north with a clean body and calm mind. Recite with absolute faith — the opening verse itself makes this the one condition:

"With unwavering love and steadfast faith, offer humble prayer with reverence — Hanuman fulfils all auspicious works of such a devotee."

It is traditionally recited 1, 3, 7, or 11 times. For serious obstacles, a 40-day recitation cycle is recommended.

Verses

Victory to Hanuman, benefactor of saints! O Lord, hear my prayer. Do not delay in your devotee's work; come swiftly and bestow great joy.

Just as you leapt across the great ocean and expanded within the mouth of Surasa — As Lankini blocked your path, you kicked her and sent her to the heavens.

You brought joy to Vibhishana, and beholding Sita, attained the highest bliss. You destroyed the garden and hurled it into the ocean; with great urgency, you broke the bonds of death.

You slew and destroyed Akshaya Kumar, wrapped your tail in flames and burned Lanka. Lanka burned like wax, and cries of victory resounded across the heavens.

Why delay now, O Lord? O Knower of all hearts, please show your grace. Victory to the giver of life to Lakshman! Come urgently and destroy all sorrows.

Victory to Hanuman, ocean of strength — mighty among the gods, supreme among warriors!

OM Hanu Hanu Hanu, O resolute Hanumat! Strike the enemy with thunderbolt force! OM Hreem Hreem Hreem, O king of monkeys! OM Hum Hum Hum — strike the enemy's heart and head!

Victory to the powerful son of Anjani! O brave Hanuman, son of Shankar! With a fierce face, destroyer of the clan of death — always Ram's helper and protector.

Ghosts, spirits, demons, night-wanderers — fire-spirits and Vetals — all shall perish! Destroy them — I implore you by Ram's oath. O Lord, uphold the honour of your name!

Let it be true — taking the oath of Hari, O messenger of Ram, take form and rush to strike! Victory, victory, victory, O fathomless Hanuman! What sin has this devotee committed to suffer so?

Your devotee knows nothing of rituals, chanting, or austerities. In forests, roads, mountains, or homes — with your strength, I fear nothing.

I call myself a servant of Sita and Hari — by their oath, do not delay. Victory, victory, victory resounds in the sky; remembering you, unbearable sorrow is destroyed.

Holding your feet, with folded hands I implore — whom else shall I call at this moment? Rise, rise, come forth — I beseech you by Ram! I fall at your feet with folded hands.

OM Chan Chan Chan Chan — O swift and agile one! OM Hanu Hanu Hanu Hanu Hanumat! OM Han Han — the restless monkey roars! OM San San — the wicked flee in fear!

Swiftly deliver your devotee — as we remember you, let joy fill our hearts. Whoever is struck by this Bajrang Baan — who in the world can then save them?

Whoever recites the Bajrang Baan — Hanuman himself guards their very life. Whoever chants this Bajrang Baan — before them, all evil spirits tremble.

Whoever offers incense and recites it always — no affliction shall remain in their body.

Closing Couplet

With firm faith in the heart, taking shelter, recite this with focused contemplation — All obstacles shall be removed; Hanuman shall make all works succeed.
